| 1989 marked two major changes in Fernandez' life. A profound vision and commission to build a "cross of light" came to Tomas from the Master artist, awakening him in the night. This vision caused Fernandez to rethink the importance of how he would use his talent for the rest of his life. The second event of 1989 was the marriage of Tomas and Bonnie Fernandez. Now two artists would dedicate their lives and talents forever together to the Glory of God... In the midst of this exciting year, Fernandez continued to create... |
| He built his trademark Ethereous kinetic metal horse for the Loudoun County Memorial Hospital Benefit, bringing the highest bid at the auction. He was also featured in National Geographic Society's World Magazine, working with Green Hedges School, in Vienna Virginia, to build a segment of another sculptural inspiration, Beyond Forever. He also gave a keynote lecture and exhibited in Neiman Marcus for McLean Project for the Arts. Finally, Tomas established a home and studio as Artist in Residence at the historic Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Virginia, and surprised his bride on their wedding day with a sculpture and fountain of two swans carrying one ribbon, in flight over their images standing on a Bridge Beyond Forever. 1990 saw the dedication of the 33' high cross monument, Crux Gloria. This cross of light and divine commission was built with the support of Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Purcellville, Virginia and was located along highway route 7 to become a cross of light for the extended community. Crux Gloria would eventually become a Virginia Landmark as well as a life changing vision for many pilgrims on their journey through life. Fernandez continued his metal animal sculptures, establishing galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Carmel, California. Tomas and Bonnie hosted their first juried group show, The Beyond Forever Arts Event, at their Oatlands plantation home. It featured nineteen artists and allowed professionals and student artists to showcase their works. Fernandez taught private and group lessons through his Oatlands studio. His commissions for churches continued as well, with a large bronze baptismal font, tabernacle, candleholder and alter for Holy Trinity Catholic Church, in Washington, D.C. In 1991 Fernandez continued to teach, lecture, exhibit, and create. Saint John the Apostle Catholic Church, in Leesburg Virginia commissioned a monumental interior stained glass cross, altar, lectern, presiding chairs, tabernacle, candle stands, processional cross, music stand, baptismal font, and an outdoor memorial fountain... read more... |
