The Metal Horse Sculpture
of Tomas Fernandez
Inspiration and evolution of design...
Fernandez's inspiration to sculpt horses
was a natural response to his
surroundings. One of his early studios
was in a barn on a 240 year old farm in
the rural town of Lincoln, Virginia. The
rolling Virginia landscape, streams,
morning mists, and the beauty of the
horses themselves were enough to
provide any artist with continued
inspiration, but the horse was something
more for Tomas.

There were unexplained mysteries that occurred with the horses on more
than one occasion. Looking back, Tomas views both the dreams that
continually brought horses as a symbolic instrument and the actual
encounters with unknown horses in the field to be an outreach of the
Creator. God was calling to Tomas to return to Him and the horse would
ultimately be the vehicle through which he would bring His lost lamb back
into the fold.
This early horse sculpture conveys the artist's exploration of the power of the silhouette and the use of conveying what is not seen to be completed by the viewer's imagination.

On one overwhelming
moonlit ride on a white
horse, Tomas experienced
an unexpected challenge
from a mysterious black
horse. The chase and
battle that followed seemed
to be the clash between
the forces of light and
darkness for the artist's
very soul.
Much of the early horse
sculpture included work
with mirrors. This would
later evolve into the
negative space and use
of light that defines
Fernandez's unique style.
In this two-dimensional horse sculpture
we see the strong use of positive and
negative space, light and dark, and the
leaping pose that will later manifest
itself in the large three-dimensional
steel horse sculptures.
This wire and wind chime sculpture
was Tomas' first pet memorial. It was
commissioned by a neighboring
farmer who wanted to remember a
favorite horse. They requested that
the image depict a heavenly
transformation of their treasured pet.
Both the white wire horse sculptures and the ethereous style that
Fernandez has come to be known for have evolved out of an original desire
to create topiary sculptures that would be both portable for special events
and not require years of growth to have a dramatic presence in the garden.
His early horse topiaries were central focal points for caterers, weddings,
gala events, horticulture clubs, and more. This topiary would later evolve
into the white wire horse sculpture, "Freedoms Gallop," and find its home in
Reagan's presidential library.

The Winged Horse
metal sculpture depicts
the early development
of both the wire style
and the ethereous
style combined.
Although the kinetic
movement has not yet
entered the ethereal
shapes, a sense of
movement is strongly
implied. Something
unique to all of
Fernandez's metal
work is that the visual
weight of the sculpture
seems lighter than air,
a formidable
accomplishment
considering the weight
of the medium.

This reflective sculpture begins the
process of sculpting with negative
space. The mirrored element will later
take form in Fernandez' sculptures
as cut out windows to the landscape
beyond. One of the horse styles to
grow out of this process will be the
Ethereous silohettes.
