...shaping artistic visions of light
Contemporary Sacred Art
of Tomas Fernandez
Fernandez has liturgical art creations
throughout the Arlington and Washington
D.C. Diocese. His contemporary sacred
art may also be found in private
collections, prayer gardens, and retreat
centers across the U.S.
Tomas has worked with Pastors and
Churches in all denominations, in the U.S.
as well as internationally, with sacred art
inspirations, demonstrations, and lectures.
"The essence of commissioned work, for
me, is meeting the artistic and design
needs of the community while prayerfully
petitioning the Lord for inspiration."
The Holy Spirit Parish was
founded by a priest who was a
missionary to China. To honor
him the community had a very
distinct roof line as part of their
church. Repeating the design
was part of my commission. At
the base is a crown of people,
(the community), man, child,
and woman holding hands. The
design repeats forming a
crown. Above them is the roof
line, and over them the
radiating image of the Holy
Spirit. The large forged steel
circle spins easily symbolically
spreading His blessing to
everyone.

Creating a Cohesive Theme
Through Liturgical Art Creations
with Tomas Fernandez
St. John's represented a wonderful
opportunity to unify elements of light and
water within the sculptural designs and
compliment the cool blue tones with warm
wood tones, such as black walnut and
maple, which are indigenous to the area.
Fernandez was consulted on all levels of
interior design, including fabric for
assembly chairs and carpeting. Notice the
soft curves on the presiding chairs
connected thematically with the altar. The
adjustable music stand uses the same
glass as the cross and tabernacle and the
wood of the altar and presiding chairs.
The large stained glass and steel cross
and tabernacle are both lit from behind
and within, creating a stained glass
window effect with a sense of movement
from the steel mosaic.

This custom baptismal font is
placed at the front of the
church and in the corners of
the triangle the same blue
glass from the cross is found.
A three element forged steel
flame is seen beneath the
water. This same design
element may be seen outside
in the large Fountain of Peace
memorial sculpture.
Note : The earlier Tomas is consulted on
a building project, the greater the
opportunity for the parish to have a
unified them. Fernandez works well with
building committees and architects to
plan, coordinate and implement a theme
that is both liturgically sound and
spiritually inspiring.

Holy Spirit in Washington DC
needed baptismal fonts, a
tabernacle and candle to
compliment existing themes

Holy Trinity in Washington DC needed an adult font that they could use
during the Easter season and an infant font that were both portable.
The large pool is made of bronze and aluminum. There is a hidden
recirculating pump that silently keeps the water flowing over it's interior
edge. The Living Water is symbolized in this 360 degree waterfall.
The adult steps into the center and the priest takes a carafe and pours it
over the head of the candidate.
The small candle holder was for a private chapel for the priests of Holy
Trinity. An altar made of black walnut and tabernacle were also
commissioned and designed to thematically unify the fonts, and existing
cross.
St. Mark's request was for a substantial candle
stand. One that could hold a 4 inch diameter
candle and have visual substance in multiple
arrangements. They needed to be light
enough for fragile volunteers to move around
easily.
The solution was to build these forged steel
and bronze candle stands. Notice that each
candle stand is made of three sections, but
that they are built in a linear fashion. Candle
cups were even designed to accommodate
both large and small candles.

processional cross Saint Davids
Episcopal church in Ashburn, Virginia
St. David's carries with its design, the use
of light. On the altar each of the three
membered legs are separated with
spacers that allow light to pass through as
you walk from left to right.
A relic from England was set into the altar.
The ambo has a small electrical light that
illuminates the cross cut through it's
center.
The credence table has hand forged
hinges and door pulls. Black walnut is
used in all the appointments, including the
staff of the processional cross. Note the
coordination of the processional cross
design with the altar.
The stained glass window was a memorial
for one of the founding members of the
parish, Vinton Pickens. The theme of the
window is Isaiah: 55, Come to the Water.
The window measure 7' x 16'.
