...shaping artistic visions of light
Tomas Fernandez sculpting Corpus Christi
Tomás J. Fernández is a Christian visual artist
with a monumental heart for God and an ability
to capture the beauty he admires in God's
creation. His ability to transcend his medium is
profound. His kinetic metal sculptures respond
to a gentle touch or warm breeze. As an
American abstract painter, he sculpts the
canvas with vibrant colors and textures. His
handcrafted cross pendant has given hope to
inner city children and his custom metal
sculptures have filled collections from the
Presidential Library to private collectors, an
airport, and businesses. His love of God, family,
neighbor, community, country, and planet is
manifested through...  community projects, memorials, environmental
projects, and the tremendous power and light within his works. He has
lectured across the US, been featured in books, magazines, and television,
yet continues to pray in humility to serve God faithfully in each divine
commission.
Fernández' first divine commission, changing his life forever, was the
monumental "Crux Gloria" in Purcellville, Virginia. This cross of light has and
continues to touch lives every day.
Before the divine commission that would not only change his life, but also
redesign his artistic vision, Fernandez had already gained great momentum
and respect as a metal sculptor and visual artist.
Tomas Fernandez was born in Washington, D.C., in December of 1955. "My
Parents, Julian and Helen Fernandez, nurtured my artistic development from
the very beginning. My home was an eclectic mixture of Spanish and Irish
culture." Tomas started out primarily as a painter; as a young man, he
traveled Europe and the America's seeking inspiration and education in the
arts.
By 1987, he was building a life size metal winged horse for the Winchester
Regional Airport Business Park. That same year he was appointed to the
Artist’s Advisory Committee for the Loudoun Arts Council and featured on
national television in a feature length program of Capital Edition's, "Metallic
Nature," a program that was nominated for an Emmy award.
In 1988, Fernandez was featured in the Washington Post as the organizer
and administrator of the Loudoun County Studio Tour. He was also featured
on a national television feature,
Washington   D.C. Artist, and on USA Today.
He worked with the Special Olympics and the Soel Olympic Park, as well as
the International Congress of Philanthropy in Toronto, Canada. Fernandez
designed and produced models for paintings and sculptures for the 200 year
anniversary celebration of the United States Constitution and received official
recognition from the Daughters of the American Revolution and Chief Justice
Burger's Bicentennial Commission. The most pivotal event of 1988 was his
meeting another artist and painter, the woman he would marry...
