| Is Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder? An Artist's Meditation by Tomas J. Fernandez What is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen? Who is the most beautiful person you have ever known? What is the most beautiful creation in God’s masterwork of the universe? After discussion, is it possible we might come to an agreement over what is most beautiful? Would we be in agreement with God, or would we find just another thing to be in disagreement over? Beauty has motivated men, women and children since the dawn of time. We have collected, traded, stolen, and battled for beautiful objects. Some beauty dazzles the eye; but there is a hidden beauty which reveals itself to those who appreciate more than what is on the surface. Take for instance painters like Van Gogh or Vermeer, both men died poor, unrecognized, in their life’s pursuit to illuminate the beautiful. Now, if you owned anything that either artist sketched or painted, it would be worth millions. We have learned to appreciate the value of their beauty through time and education. What would God say is the most beautiful part of creation? Certainly none of us would argue over His work with sunrises, sunsets, majestic clouds or landscapes. We might have difficulty agreeing over which is most beautiful. The micro biologist would take us to the microscope and the astronomer to the telescope, but where would God direct our attention? Of all God’s works of beauty, only one is created in His image. That’s right; it is us. You and I are worth the millions that a famous work of art is. Yes, and more. What if I don’t feel beautiful; or people don’t treat me like a priceless masterpiece; or I’ve done too many ugly things to be considered beautiful? Here is the good news…God loves you and sees you as worth more than all the diamonds and paintings put together. He wants to restore His priceless work of art and have you with Him for all of eternity. You don’t have to go to a museum and pay thousands to have a cleaning and restoration. His son Jesus, upon your asking, will restore you to the vision His Father had for you at conception in your mother’s womb. He formed you in His image. Pray and ask for the sensitivity to recognize this beauty in yourself and your neighbor. Let your self be educated to recognize true beauty. You are a masterpiece, formed by God’s hands. |
